GeoIP-1.6.12-6.el8

FEDORA-EPEL-2019-c87c9197ea created by mstevens 5 years ago for Fedora EPEL 8

GeoIP is a C library that enables the user to find the country that any IP address or hostname originates from. It uses file based databases that can optionally be updated on a weekly basis by installing the geoipupdate-cron (IPv4) and/or geoipupdate-cron6 (IPv6) packages.

This update has been unpushed.

Are there plans to push this or replace it?

What happened to this package? I went looking for it today to find out why it isn't in EPEL and it's been unpushed. Is something wrong with it? How can we help to get this package into EPEL?

Please note: This package is no longer supported by the maintainer and upstream developer and we do not want to support it, because of the long lifetime of RHEL8.

Hello

I had a conversation with Paul Howarth few days ago, previous maintainer of this package. We both agree that this package has to be removed but for now, some packages still need this.

Paul named me as the new maintainer to do the transition. Is it possible to build this package and for example, in one year, delete it ?

Thanks

If you're going to ship this package, you'll need to build GeoIP-GeoLite-data and add that to the update because otherwise GeoIP will have broken dependencies.

If you're not sure about whether you can remove a package after a year or so (I think you can, but I also think it's against the spirit of EPEL to provide something now knowing that you intend to remove it long before the end of life of EL-8), you might want to discuss it on the EPEL devel list.

Hello

Yes, GeoIP-GeoLite-data is identified. Paul also give me the ownership.

If this is against the spirit of EPEL, I will maintain these packages until the end of life of EPEL 8.

Regards

Hi, (I'm Paul Howarth by the way) Re: GeoIP-GeoLite-data, it should be included in the same update as GeoIP. Cheers, Paul.

Hello

So, in the end, is it possible to push GeoIP ? Can I unpushed this current update ?

Thanks

Regards

If you're happy to maintain it and deal with the bugs you'll get about it being broken and/or out of date, by all means push it to EPEL-8. But make an update containing both GeoIP and GeoIP-GeoLite-data, don't just push GeoIP on its own.

Hello

I'm OK with you. Build already exists but I'm not the owner of the build (I'm the owner on https://src.fedoraproject.org/). How can I add this build to this update ?

Thanks for your help

Regards

OK so I see there is this update plus https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-EPEL-2019-674a57f9a4 for GeoIP-GeoLite-data, both created by Morten Stevens. So it seems like the options are either that Morten pushes both updates again or Thomas bumps and rebuilds both packages and then creates a new combined update for them both.

I'm fine either way.

Paul.

Let me know what I have to do :)

@totol

All right. Just create a new build and submit it together with GeoIP-GeoLite-data as an update.
