Additionally 3.8.1 breaks pocl

https://github.com/pocl/pocl/issues/413

User Icon jistone commented & provided feedback 8 years ago

@funfunctor It sounds like that pocl bug is a problem for all 3.8, in which case this is not a regression from the current 3.8.0, therefore shouldn't block this update. Agreed?

It looks like pocl already applied a workaround for 0.13, which should probably be considered for the Fedora package.

This update doesn't preclude doing a 3.9 rebase later for #1381109. But for now, this is an soname-compatible update with much less friction.

User Icon jistone commented & provided feedback 8 years ago

Sorry, I re-read and realized that pocl closed the 0.13 workaround PR without merging. They did merge the master workaround though, and it's still probably a good patch for Fedora.

@jistone

Fair enough, however I think getting #1381109 resolved is more of a issue than perhaps is understood.

There is a very large ecosystem growing around this Valve Steam Linux gaming thing in general. The older LLVM API blocks having a great many of those applications working out the box on Fedora. It seems highly prudent to me to not ignore that segment of the community, in fact some of those vendors (e.g., Feral Interactive) appear to be vigorously reaching out to distributions to get things updated ASAP. This doesn't just apply to games, there are other graphics intensive applications that would suddenly become accessible also.

WFM

@funfunctor it would be better to make your case on the bug, but I think it mostly comes down to having developer time for a big rebase, including all dependent packages. I don't have time to work on this myself right now.
